Detention

Be QUIET! If you're in one of my detention classes then you must have upset Mr Bibs somehow. It's no good sniffling now, boy. And you, girl, take that gum out of your mouth! And whatever are those things in your ears?

No whispering!

Right, settle down. You have 30 minutes to complete these questions, in silence! And if you get them wrong, I'll... I'll... well, you'd better not get them wrong, that's all!

What?

Yes, Jemima, they ARE hard. That's the point of detention.

I know it's sunny, Steven, but you should have thought of that before you put Matron's cat in her washing basket on Thursday, shouldn't you! I'm quite sure Mr Bibs didn't mean that when he said he wanted the garden to have some nice bloomers.

Right. When you are finished, Sculcoates will take your answers. That park attendant at the boating lake owes me five shillings, so I'm off for a row.

Detention Questions

Write on both sides of the paper, either way up. Use a pen. You have thirty minutes only. Strictly NO TALKING!

1. A farmer has 45 sheep. Two in every five are black. He sells the black sheep for £50 each. How much does he receive? (four marks)

2. Factorise completely 4xy - 6xz. (two marks)

3. Mrs Blake put £3000 in a building society account that offered 6 per cent interest per year. Interest was added to the account at the end of each year...

1. How much did she have in her account 3 years later, after the final interest had been added? (three marks)
2. An annual rate of interest between 7% and 8% would be required for a sum of money to double in ten years. Use a trial and improvement method to find this rate of interest. Give your answer as a percentage to 1 decimal place. (four marks)

4. Maria walks 10 miles to a waterfall at an average speed of x miles per hour...

1. Write down, in terms of x, the time taken in hours. (one mark)
2. Maria returns from the waterfall but this time she walks the 10 miles at an average speed of (x + 1) miles per hour. The time of the return journey is 30 minutes less than the time of the first journey. Write down an equation in x and show that it simplifies to x² + x - 20 = 0. (four marks)
3. Solve the equation x² + x - 20 = 0. (two marks)
4. Find the time Maria takes to walk to the waterfall. (two marks)

5. A particle moves from rest in a straight line and after t seconds, its velocity is (3t-4t) feet per second. Calculate the distance which the particle travels in the interval of time from t= 2 to t= 5 (a million marks)
